Why is this site called Marvellous Melbourne?

My understanding is Melbourne was coined 'Marvellous Melbourne' during Mark Twain's visit here in the 1880's.

At that time, Melbourne was going through rapid change with grand and tall buildings being constructed for the time. Our population was the largest in Australia, we were experiencing the largest population growth, we were a top tourism destination and we were the 2nd most important city in the British Empire behind London. At that time, our population was also larger than Los Angeles!

Since then, we have become the 2nd most important city in Australia and many cities around the world have become more important across many levels of industry.

I am all for preserving our heritage, but can't understand those associated with this site who are against EVERY new development? Luckily, those associated with hindering Melbourne now are in a losing battle.

I can imagine in the late 19th century, there would have been people against the growth and development of this city is the case with NIMBYs now. Thank heavens they didn't succeed.
