SOMETHING REALLY ASTONISHING HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION TODAY.
This does make you wonder about the democratic system of our central city and how this must effect the planning decisions at times.
In all Council, State and Federal elections to be eligible to vote you have to be an Australian citizen – fair enough. You cant vote in any other country when you might go there for awhile. However in the City of Melbourne you are able to vote if you have been in Melbourne for one month, no matter what your nationality. One month!!! Then you can vote for councillors who will make major decisions about planning in our City of Melbourne.
And believe it or not this very undemocratic rule being practised by the City of Melbourne was ratified in Parliament recently without objection from either side.
Do you know any other country or city in the world where you can vote if you are not a citizen and have only been there one month???
